Declaration of interest regarding PhD project: A Health Economics Study of Stem Cell Treatment - Syddansk Universitet
Danish Center for Health Economics (DaCHE), Department of Public Health at SDU is looking for applicants for a PhD scholarship within the field of health economic evaluation. We are looking for a person with a relevant degree (e.g. health economics, economics, statistics, data science, public health science).

Research environment
The position is anchored at the Danish Center for Health Economics (DaCHE), Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark. You will work closely with Senior Health Economist Line Planck Kongstad and Professor and director of DaCHE, Dorte Gyrd-Hansen, Professor and leader of STEMBRACE, Ditte Caroline Andersen and collaborate with researchers from various institutes at SDU, Odense.
At DaCHE, we apply economic theory and empirical methods to answer health policy research questions and improve research methods. Our main research themes include health-related behavior, equity in health and access to healthcare, patient and public preferences, and evaluating new healthcare interventions and policies.We use a broad set of methods, including register-based analysis and survey data collection. DaCHE is an international environment with a strong academic and social PhD community.
The PhD project is part of STEMBRACE an interdisciplinary research project focused on current and future stem cell treatments, addressing ethical, economic, and patient-centered issues, as well as societal attitudes. It leverages collaborations between cell biologists, clinicians, GMP specialists, anthropologists, philosophers, geneticists, and health economists.The project aims to prepare healthcare systems and society for future stem cell treatments by developing and executing therapies for selected diseases in the Danish healthcare system. It uses a citizen- and patient-based format to address ethics, patient perspectives, and costs, clearly defining societal benefits and pitfalls.
Project description
We are looking for applicants for a PhD scholarship for the project "Socioeconomic Consequences of Peri-Anal Fistulas and the Role of Regenerative Cell Therapeutics," which is part of STEMBRACE. The project investigates the social and economic consequences of PAF, the costs and cost-effectiveness of stem cell treatment, the value of future clinical trials, and societal preferences for stem cell treatment.The aim is to improve patient quality of life and generate societal benefits. This PhD project is ideal for those interested in the economic evaluation of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) and aspiring to work in Pharmacoeconomics.
The PhD position is for three years, starting in September 2025. As a PhD student, you will plan, lead, and execute the project in collaboration with your supervisors, contribute to the overall project development, and participate in teaching activities at the Department of Public Health.
Qualifications- Interest in health economics research within medical technology, regenerative medicine, and economic evaluation methods
- Knowledge of health economics evaluation methods
- Excellent analytical abilities and scientific work skills, including systematic and critical thinking
- Ability to work independently and engage in interdisciplinary collaboration
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in both Danish and English
- Experience with register-based research and coding/statistical analyses is an advantage
- Documented experience with writing and publishing scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals
