-track Assistant Professorship(s) in Social Anthropology, University of Copenhagen The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), invites excellent candidates for one or more tenure-track assistant professorships in Social Anthropology.

Specifically, we seek excellent candidates who introduce new research agendas to the Department (i.e.
new and/or underprioritized thematic, regional, methodological fields) or bring complementary perspectives to areas already represented with the potential to develop an independent research and teaching profile.
We expect candidates to be able to teach a wide variety of courses on our degree programs.

The position(s) is available from 1 May 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
A tenure-track assistant professorship is a six-year, fixed-term academic position involving both research and teaching.

The successful candidate will be obliged to complete a teacher-training course designed especially for assistant professors and will be expected to take part in all the activities of the Department, including examinations and administration.

Approximately six months before the end of the six-year period as tenure-track assistant professor, a committee set up by the Dean will assess whether the assistant professor can be considered for promotion to a tenured position as associate professor.

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen is one of Europe’s largest anthropological research institutions, with a research and teaching staff of about 30, approximately 450 students at the BSc and MSc levels and just over 20 PhD students.

In addition to the BSc and MSc in Anthropology, the Department also contributes to two cross-disciplinary MSc programs in Global Development and Social Data Science.
The Department of Anthropology has a strong international research profile and a vibrant and dynamic research and teaching environment.

The department has a new strategy (2023-2028) which builds on the University of Copenhagen’s Strategy 2030 and the new Tenure Track Assistant Professor(s) is expected to contribute actively to this, holding responsibility for further development of the Department’s research, teaching, and outreach activities in the field of political anthropology, in collaboration with Department colleagues and contributing to the sustaining of a supportive working environment.

Candidates will be assessed according to the below list of qualifications and the University of Copenhagen’s six overall merit criteria for tenure track assistant professor appointments.

Qualifications The following qualifications are required: PhD degree in social anthropology or related field Peer-reviewed publications in recognized journals, chapters in anthologies and/or a PhD monograph within the field of social anthropology (or related field) Teaching experience Experience with ethnographic fieldwork (in connection with PhD dissertation), drawing on a variety of research methods and forms of analysis, Ability to put research and teaching into a societal perspective Interest in participating in the preparation of grant applications for research funds and international collaboration Commitment to collegiality, well-being, collaboration, equal treatment, diversity and a good working environment.

Job description General duties include: Research in the field of Social Anthropology or related Teaching, supervision, and examination at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, Contribution to the Department’s commons – administrative and leadership tasks, Knowledge sharing with society, Research and teaching management, Developing skills for raising research funds.

  • Department of Anthropology Terms of employment Employment with the Faculty of Social Sciences and progression within employment will be determined only by personal merit.

We do this by applying academic criteria of the University of Copenhagen which are related to the duties and conditions of each particular post and the needs of the Department concerned.

The position is a tenure-track appointment with a view to promotion and appointment as a tenured Associate Professor.
It is therefore expected that the appointed assistant professor acquires proficiency in Danish required to read assignments, converse with students and interact with colleagues in that language during their time as assistant professor.
The Department will provide resources for language training.
