Student Assistant to the Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Lab
At the Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Lab, Aalborg University, we are looking for 3–4 student assistants to join us in developing cutting-edge systems that combine generative artificial intelligence with physical robots — work that is as technically challenging as it is meaningful.
Position type: TemporaryPeriod: August–December 2026
Working hours: 8 hours per week
Location: AAU City Campus, harbourfront
Your work tasks
You will become part of an interdisciplinary research project that brings together generative AI technologies — including large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and knowledge graphs — and connects them with the sensors and actuators of physical robots. The overarching goal is to create robots that can function as peers or tutors in educational settings, spanning both primary and secondary school levels.
Depending on your background and interests, your work will fall within one of two broad areas. On the robotic frontend, tasks include developing and integrating speech input and output pipelines, as well as computer vision capabilities that allow the robot to perceive and respond to its environment and the people in it.On the backend, tasks involve extracting structured knowledge from human-robot interactions, generating pedagogically meaningful questions from knowledge graphs, and building the reasoning layers that drive the robot's dialogue and behavior.
Your competencies
We are looking for candidates with solid programming skills in Python and/or C, combined with hands-on experience in at least two of the following areas: machine learning, generative AI, computer vision, the Robot Operating System (ROS), the Neo4j graph database, knowledge graphs, or dialogue modelling.Familiarity with collaborative development tools such as GitHub is an advantage, though not a requirement.
Beyond technical skills, we value curiosity and a willingness to work across disciplines. You are someone who takes initiative, communicates openly, and is motivated by seeing your work make a tangible difference.
We do not expect you to have mastered everything on this list. What matters is that you bring genuine engagement, a strong foundation to build on, and the drive to learn quickly.
Who we are
The HRI Lab is an interdisciplinary and international research group at Aalborg University, bringing together researchers from the Technical Faculty of IT and Design and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. We work on next-generation robotic solutions aimed at promoting an inclusive society, i.e robots that can adapt to diverse users, environments, and needs.
A defining feature of how we work is our commitment to real-world relevance. Our projects are developed in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders such as schools, educators, and end users, and our systems are tested in the field, not only under controlled laboratory conditions. This means your work will have a direct path from prototype to practice.
