Residential Housing Inspector (Housing Assistant)

The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen is seeking a qualified Residential Housing Inspector to support the Embassy's housing program by ensuring that residential properties meet safety, quality, and compliance standards. Working under the supervision of the Housing Coordinator and General Services Officer (GSO), the incumbent conducts inspections, oversees property preparation processes, and directs contractors to prepare properties for incoming and departing personnel.This position also serves as the Assistant Occupational Safety and Health Officer, supporting the Mission's safety and fire protection programs
This is a non-supervisory position. However, the position has oversight and will direct 3-5 contractors and vendors to respond to scheduled and unscheduled work assignments, and emergency situations or otherwise as directed by the Housing Coordinator or GSO.
What You'll Do- Inspect more than 70 residences at different stages — before signing the lease, before move-in, before move-out, after repairs are finished, and during regular check-ups throughout the year.
- Assess prospective properties for the Housing Pool and submit detailed reports on required repairs and conditions.
- Evaluate properties against Department of State, National Electrical Code, NFPA, and local building standards.
- Publish inspection reports in English and Danish, outlining conditions, repair timelines, and cost estimates.
- Oversee and direct 3 to 5 contractors and vendors on scheduled, unscheduled, and emergency maintenance assignments.
- Support the Post Occupational Safety and Health Officer (POSHO) with safety surveys, inspections, and basic safety training.
- Maintain POSHO certifications, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment across Short Term Lease properties.
- Handle general, non-landlord maintenance work orders for Short Term Lease properties and coordinate with the Housing Assistant.
- Assist with Purchase Requests and Purchase Orders in Ariba related to inspection and housing needs.
- Serve as a Government Purchase Cardholder, making authorized purchases in accordance with Federal Acquisition Regulations and Department of State policy.
Qualification Requirements
Education- Successful completion of at least two years of post-secondary study at a college, university, or vocational school, or an equivalent Danish trades degree is required.
- A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in building construction, residential management, or facilities management is required.
- English: good working knowledge (speaking, reading, and writing).
- Danish: good working knowledge (speaking, reading, and writing).
- Comprehensive knowledge of local building codes and a solid understanding of design, construction, and maintenance procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret floor plans created in AutoCAD or similar software.
- Strong planning, scheduling, and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively and independently.
- Ability to supervise a multi-trade contractor workforce and monitor compliance with building, plumbing, and electrical standards.
- Familiarity with local and U.S. building codes.
Benefits Package
Grade/Salary: LE-7 – DKK 489,062 per year
This position offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including:
- Vacation Bonus: A vacation bonus equivalent to 3.4% of basic salary is paid once a year in May.
